Cloud computing 101

Web designers in Brisbane recognise that technology is constantly changing and we need to keep up-to-date with these changes. One of these changes has been cloud computing. The problem is that lots of people have heard of cloud computing, but not everyone knows what it is and how it can help their business.

What is cloud computing?

Cloud computing is basically storing information in a digital format on the Internet, rather than on your computer’s hard drive. Up until the last half decade or so, we have been saving data and files on our hard drives and on USBs or external drives, when we want to use files both at home and at work. If you lose or forget your storage device however, life becomes very difficult. But this is something we have had to live with – until now.

Who uses the cloud?

About 14 million of us in Australia use the cloud, but only 26% of people in Australia actually know they are using cloud computing.  So how do you know if you are already using cloud computing?

Well, do you use Gmail? How about Kindle? Because that’s using cloud computing. If you use Microsoft SkyDrive, Google Docs, DropBox or Flickr, then you are using the cloud to store your data, files and images.

People are using technology based on cloud computing every day without realising it, and if you put some thought into it, you will realise that your business already uses cloud computing in some way, every day.

How can cloud computing benefit my business?

The benefit of cloud computing to businesses is that you no longer have to keep multiple backups of data and files, because they can be accessed via the cloud. You can also be fully mobile and not worry about USBs anymore, as you can access your data on any device, anywhere. Cloud computing also allows multiple users to access data and files and to work on projects, all at the same time.

Cloud computing can make your business run far more efficiently, reduce your IT costs and give you the flexibility you need as your business grows.
