Small businesses are missing “huge opportunities” by not going online, as new figures reveal that more than half of Australia’s smaller operators don’t have a website, even though they can be simple and cheap to set up.

While almost all larger companies have a web presence, just 43 per cent of businesses with less than 20 employees are online, according to Australian Bureau of Statistics figures released yesterday.
The report also showed that only 26 per cent sell their products online.
Council of Small Business of Australia head Peter Strong says that websites can be simple and cheap to set up and will open the doors to a lot more customers.
“If you’re not on the internet they [customers] can’t find you,” Mr Strong said. “You really should have a very simple website and you can get them for next to nothing.”
