As a business owner, being in control of all parts of your operations is vital to increasing brand exposure and gaining an edge over the competition. So it is only natural that when it comes to your website, you want that same level of control. There is nothing wrong with wanting to make sure that every aspect of your operations are running smoothly, but we’re also sure that you already delegate certain tasks to people with the right experience in specialised areas of your business.
The plain fact of the matter is that sometimes you need experts within your business and you need to delegate and lead from the front, not be madly pushing from the back end.
How does this relate to websites?
I am sure that you can see where I am going with this – there are some things that you need to leave to the experts and fiddling with the back end of your website fits nicely into this category.
Designing and making changes to websites is a specialised area and there are so many ways that the inexperienced can simply crash their sites, without realising what they did wrong and having no idea how to fix it. Don’t get me wrong, the ability to load new content and images to your website is essential, but if you want changes made to some other areas, its best to leave these to your developer.
For example, you may want to change the header or add content to the footer, or some other change to the overall template of your site. While some of these things may not be difficult to achieve using the right software, in many cases they involve making alterations to the code of your website. The problem is that if you don’t know what you are doing, you can cause serious problems with your website. It is actually quite easy to crash your site so badly that it has to be reinstalled, because you can’t access it via the administration panel anymore.
So yes, add content and images to your website by going into the posts and pages sections of your website, but stay away from the themes and plugin areas and do not go into the file editor. Leverage your developer and leave them to deal with the back end of your website. You’ll be much better off paying a small fee for minor changes than spending hours trying to work out what you did wrong or paying top dollar for urgent support from your developer.
